Dan Bergman
"I’m digging it!” said Nurse Dan Bergman about his life as a volunteer on the hospital ship, the Africa Mercy. Originally from California, but most recently from Colorado, his varied medical experience dates back to 1995. As an emergency medic, paramedic, and emergency helicopter flight nurse, he has been involved with critical care for sixteen years. He served in Special Services in the U.S. Army for 15 years and has been a nurse for the past ten years.
At sixteen, he went on his first YWAM (Youth with a Mission) mission – a six-week trip to Australia which changed the course of his life. He accepted Christ on that trip and has been involved with missions every summer since. He was even a missions pastor at his church.
Dan greatly enjoyed Boy Scouts. At age 17 he earned his Eagle Scout rank by completing a project to build a church fire escape, which included a retaining wall and concrete stairs. He is an avid fisherman and also enjoys playing guitar for the worship team. He and his wife, Tiffany, a hospital administrative assistant, were married in 1998 and have two daughters – Savannah (7) and Kylie (10).
Dan and Tiffany learned about Mercy Ships through family members, some who served onboard the Anastasis and others who are now serving onboard the Africa Mercy. But their service onboard didn’t come into the realm of possibility until recently when they became sure that God was leading them to this area of service.
Dan began his long-term commitment with Mercy Ships as ICU Coordinator, moved on to post-operative care, and is now Patient Services Coordinator. In addition, he is the Dive Team Leader, doing the vital work of making several dives a week under the ship to clear debris from the outlets so that the generator won’t shut down.
Dan is enthusiastic about all he does and, with a ready smile, eagerly takes on the next adventure. “I’m ready to go wherever – just get dressed and get going!”
