Shipbuilding Software Firm Dunks Their Bosses for Mercy Ships

Denis Morain about to get dunkedAs part of their celebration of 20 years of shipbuilding and offshore software innovation, ShipConstructors Software Inc. (SSI) of Victoria, BC, dunked their managers at a staff and family day in mid-July, giving the proceeds to Mercy Ships.

Managers  Denis Morais and Justin Paquin may have shivered on that dunk tank seat anticipating staffers hitting the target with the balls that they seemed to be so willing to pay for, but they knew it was for a good cause.

In 2009, SSI decided to forego sending Christmas cards to clients and partners and instead give the money to a charity. Mercy Ships came to the forefront because of the obvious connection with the use of ships in helping to serve the needs of the forgotten poor.  With Mercy Ships as their charity of choice, ShipConstructors held numerous fundraising events, delivering another $500 last week from the dunk tank event to add to the more than $3000 already donated throughout the year.

The 65 staff in their corporate office in Victoria and subsidiary office in Mobile, AL, participated in such events as a silent auction, bake sales, and a staff rock band “concert” to add to the corporate annual donation. One staff member who  has a penchant for plants in his office, decided to sell all his plants and give the proceeds to Mercy Ships when he moved on to another job.

ShipConstructor (www.shipconstructor.com), with representatives around the world, is an AutoCAD based shipbuilding CAD/CAM software suite that provides detail design and modeling tools for production engineering of marine structures. ShipConstructor captures all information relevant to the 3D design, manufacturing, maintenance, repair and refit of complex marine projects inside of a Marine Information Model (MIM).  Their software is used worldwide, including applications for the navy and coast guard, tankers, ferries and offshore drilling rigs. They have also offered their software to Mercy Ships should the time come when international leadership are in a position to design their own mercy ship.

Mercy Ships Canada Director Tim Maloney says, “We’re humbled and inspired by the way this Victoria company which has worldwide status has turned their success in the marine industry toward a partnership that uses ships to bring hope and healing. We’ve witnessed how their camaraderie, which strengthens their own team, can reach beyond their offices to the lives of others they’ll never meet. We are thankful for their continued participation with us – they are a great example of a relatively small corporation making a big difference in helping Mercy Ships transform lives.”
