Segment to highlight life-changing medical procedures performed on non-profit hospital ship

GARDEN VALLEY, TX – (FEB. 14, 2013) – Mercy Ships, an international nonprofit organization that operates hospital ships and provides medical aid to the world’s forgotten poor, will be featured on CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday, Feb. 17 at approximately 7 p.m. EST. The segment, which was reported by award-winning journalist Scott Pelley, will highlight the mission of Mercy Ships to bring hope and healing to the developing world by using hospital ships to deliver free, world-class health care services.

Mercy Ships medical services include cleft lip and palate repair, cataract removal, orthapaedic procedures, maxilla-facial reconstruction and plastic surgery, obstetric fistula repair and dental care. The organization also trains local medical professionals in their area of expertise and completes community development projects that focus on water and sanitation, education, infrastructure development and agriculture.

In May 2012, Pelley and a team of “60 Minutes” producers came onboard the Africa Mercy, the world’s largest charity ship and the Mercy Ships floating hospital. The ship includes six state-of-the-art operating rooms, an intensive care unit, CT Scanner and bed space for up to 78 patients. During their stay, the “60 Minutes” crew interviewed a variety of staff, crew and volunteers including Mercy Ships Founder/President Don Stephens; Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Gary Parker; and Captain Jon Fadely. Additionally, “60 Minutes” captured the stories of several patients including those being treated for cataracts and maxilla-facial conditions.

“We are thrilled to be sharing our story with a national audience,” said Stephens. “Our hope is that everyone who watches our story will have a better understanding of our work, and will keep our mission in their thoughts and prayers.”

How heart warming to see soo much good being done for people who would never ever have the resources to improve their health condition that they have been afflicted with by no fault of their own. Thank you “60 minutes” for bringing this story to us. And a special “Thank You to all” the skilled, dedicated and caring people who make this life changing mission possible each and every day.

Wow thanks to 60 mins for enlightening us on how fortunate we are yet we don’t fully appreciate. So many people need our help. I hope we all will contribute as this is a worthy cause. They do NEED our help. Thanks to the Mercy Team. God’s continuous blessings.

I am a middle school student, and I saw the story on 60 Minutes last night and loved it. We are now doing a unit on empowerment in school, and I needed an organization that empowers people, and I thought of Mercy Ships right away. This was a very touching story and will donate if I can.
    Good luck!

I watched your story on 60 minutes. I have to say, what an inspirational story. That ship is filled with Angels. They need more stories like yours and less about the bad in this world. Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing and doing what you all do.

Dear Mercy Ships….I tried to make a donation but it wouldn’t take my information. I Don’t know what CVS means and I don’t have a zip code since I live in Canada.

    Gisela,

At the top of the donation form, the is a small Canadian flag and blue text link that says “Canadian donors click here”. You can go to that link to make your gift using a Canadian address. The CVC is the Credit card Verification Code located on the back of your card. It is typically 3 digits in length.

    Thank you for your generosity!

    Hi, I’m writing from Denmark.
I’ve been familiar with Mercy Ships for quite a few years. I visited Anastasis, when it once were located in Denmark. Since that day I’ve had a great desire to be a part of the crew. I’m NOT medical trained, but has experience with computers (works as support technician right now).

I loved the spot from 60 minutes. It was easy to see the interviewer was moved by what he saw and heard.

Another great show to watch, regarding Mercy Ships, is the Discovery Channel programme: MIGHTY SHIPS. They had a full episode once about Africa Mercy.

For me personally, I think I better start saving up, so I can be a part of Mercy Ships.

GOD BLESS EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH MERCY SHIPS. May God keep you safe on the sea, and everywhere else you’ll be located!!!!

Watched 60 mins reporting on mercy ships last night from Hong Kong Pearl Channel. Amazed at how one can do for others. It is not a question of ability, but one of readiness. I am total inspired by everyone and everything reported in the story. My son is a pharmacist registered at the end of the year. Hopefully, he can get a chance to do something on the ship. I of course, will reconsider my life……..
    God bless every angels there!!

Saw the episode on 60 minutes about mercy ships and was so sad to see how people this day and age have to suffer. I just cannot understand why this happens in this time of life, that as a world we cannot all pull together to help one another. i was deeply saddened to see the girl named Ester having to fight for her life. I am glad that i happened to watch 60 minutes that night and was informed about mercy ships and what they do to help the people of these countries. Which as of this day i will support Mercy Ships Cause. May God bless all the volunteers, and the people that really need there help, and may GOD bless you, Ester

I was incredibly moved by this news segment and the impact the Mercy ship is having. I was reminded of the things we in the west have and so take for granted… clean water and rarity of blindness, which are so easily remedied. Thank you for making this segment available and for all you are doing. The Mercy ship is an inspiration!

Simply incredible! I was clueless about Mercy ships. I was looking for an interview on 60 mins for my school project and clicked on Africa Mercy and was moved. I can’t find any better interview for my project. Watching the interview with Dr. Parker and the nurses was so motivating. I am in a nursing school and I wish someday I can go on Mercy ship and contribute in some way. Amen!
God bless all those who have contributed in this project.

I watched Scott Pelley reporting on 60 minutes and I saw him getting moved as much as those of us watching at home and in awe at the indomable spirit and great compassion that these doctors and nurses have on Mercy Ships!
I direct the admission process for graduate and continuing studies for nurses at North Park University in Chicago and today I received a call from a prospective student. I was so thrilled to know I was talking to one of the Mercy Ship nurses! She had some questions for me but I probably had more questions for her! When I told her I had seen the story on TV she said, “You did? That’s my home!” She said she feels more strongly about taking a break to be able to complete her master’s degree in advanced practice, and that she feels it is God’s wish for her. She said she’d like to be better prepared so that she can give more to her patients in Africa. Her commitment to Africa is huge. I told her that I had seen on 60 minutes that when a kid is in line waiting to receive medical care because they have a face tumor or other deformation that those also in need of immediate care would pass the kid around from arm to arm from the back of the line until the child reaches the ship entrance. She said it was true, “Those kids have stolen my heart!”
She’s planning a short visit to the USA this summer. I will be honored to help her through the admission process and I hope that I meet her in person soon and that she does become a family nurse practitioner through our university! Thanks to all the people who work on the Mercy Ships.
