Addendum to Mercy Ships’ Code of Conduct

For all crew of Africa Mercy during field service.

ALCOHOL

While serving aboard the Africa Mercy, there is to be no going to bars, nightclubs, discos, or similar establishments at any time as many Christians, members of the Islamic community and the general populace in Africa do not view these establishments in a positive light.

While ashore, a maximum of two glasses of wine or beer, with a sit down meal is generally acceptable (less than this amount, if necessary, to avoid becoming drunk). Drinking alcohol outside of a meal is not acceptable.

Operating a Mercy Ships vehicle is a serious responsibility and therefore no alcohol is to be consumed prior to or while driving.

DRESS CODE

Please read and comply with the prescribed dress code specific to our field service location.

SEXUAL IMMORALITY/HARASSMENT

In a desire to honour all crew, a crew member is not allowed to meet in a cabin alone with someone of the opposite sex who is not their spouse after 10pm.  A man and woman who are not married should not travel alone together overnight, or share a hotel room, nor should a group of men and women share a hotel room. Although these practices are considered acceptable in some western nations, in many cultures such behaviour is closely associated with sexual immorality.

 COMMUNITY GATHERINGS

Community Gatherings are important as they are a time of fellowship, worship & teaching.  Attendance is expected for all adult members – 13 years old and up.  Our Community Gatherings are usually held on Monday morning at 07:45 to 08:30 and Thursday evening at 19:30 to 21:00.  Other meetings may be announced.  The Academy children do not have to attend Monday morning Community Gathering Devotions.  It is understood that on occasion, illness, or other extenuating circumstances may cause a crew member not to attend an expected meeting. However, such an absence must be cleared through your work leader. It is also understood that in families with young children, one of the parents may not be able to attend these meetings.
