Entry Training
Gateway: Field Service Overview
WHAT DO WE DO ON FIELD SERVICE?
Field Service is a continuation of the training begun in the classroom. You will find opportunities for personal application of the concepts discussed in class. Many of these issues have to do with recognizing our Western-minded tendency to go and “do something” or “fix something” rather than focus on relationships that develop and empower the individuals with whom we work.
Therefore, the Gateway Field Service will strive to select projects that meet the following criteria:
1) Partners with individuals/groups who have a long-term work already present.
2) Empowers the local community to develop themselves.
3) Is conducive to bridging participants with locals to form the basis of relationships.
The specific goals for your field service team will be discussed in more detail at the four Tuesday evening Field Service Preparation times during the Education Phase of Gateway. We look forward to seeing this team come together to glorify God.
You will:
- Practice cross-cultural ministry within a “warm” culture.
- Experience the value of relationships and interact with the poor as individuals with great potential.
- Have the opportunity to adapt and adjust to internal and external challenges of working with the poor, prior to adjusting to a new job, a new community, African culture, etc. onboard the ship.
