Meet Birane

Country | Senegal

Age | 5

Surgery | Maxillofacial

Birane was born with a cleft lip that made it difficult to eat and speak properly — and harder to express the joyful spirit he had inside. Birane’s dad died when he was 2 years old, and ever since, he has lived with his grandmother who worried desperately for his future. She prayed for a way for Birane’s cleft condition to be healed.

Then one day, a local doctor told Birane’s grandmother that Mercy Ships was coming to Senegal and could provide a safe surgery that could heal Birane’s smile at no cost. She was overjoyed and soon she and Birane made the journey to the port of Dakar where the Africa Mercy and Mercy Ships volunteer medical crew was waiting.

Soon after,  Birane received the surgery that would repair his cleft lip and change his life forever.  After surgery, Birane attended a series of follow-up appointments to make sure his lip was healing properly. Then both he and his grandmother were able to return home.

Thanks to friends like you, Birane received a life-changing surgery on the Africa Mercy.

Birane’s grandmother is very happy to see him smiling like other children and being able to express his joyful spirit.  She is grateful for the free surgery made possible thanks to the generous partners who support the Mercy Ships mission.

“I am very happy to see my grandson smile,” Birane’s grandmother said. “I will continue to pray for the Africa Mercy.”
