Dieynaba was a joyful young girl who loved to dance. But when she was 3 years old, she fell into hot oil, leaving the left side of her body terribly burned. Dieynaba’s left arm and the fingers of her left hand became contracted from the burns and she lost mobility in her arm.

After that, her mother, Hawa Ndieye, remembers Dieynaba becoming less joyful and more subdued. “She stopped dancing,” Hawa Ndieye said. But because of her faith, Hawa Ndieye’s response to her daughter’s situation was hopeful and never bitter. “God is in control,” she said as she prayed over and over for her daughter’s healing.

Her family were able to pay for a local surgery for Dieynaba, but ultimately the procedure failed to restore her mobility. With no other options, they held on to their faith, but Dieynaba lived nine long years with her condition before her mother’s prayers were answered.

It happened on the day a friend told the family about a ship that was coming to Dakar with volunteers to give free surgical care. Dieynaba, now 11 years old, courageously boarded the Africa Mercy to receive a free life-changing surgery.

Thanks to friends like you, Dieynaba received a life-changing surgery on the Africa Mercy.

Because of the risk that the contracture will re-form, rehab begins as soon as the patient is strong enough. It’s a long and hard process, but throughout it all Dieynaba exuded a quiet strength.

“She is very brave,” Hawa Ndieye said.

As she healed, Dieynaba stole the hearts of the volunteers who helped her recover.

“I will not forget the way the nurses have treated me and taken care of me,” she said. “It is unforgettable.”

Today after her long journey to healing, Dieynaba’s joyful personality has returned and she is looking toward a brighter, happier future.
