December 1st will be the 8th annual Giving Tuesday — a worldwide movement following Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Every year, people from around the world join together on this day of charity to give back to those who need it most.

And following a year of uncertainty, we want to share the importance of your impact. Your support changes the lives of those who need it most. And thanks to a generous donor, your gift will double up to $50,000! This means more healing, more joy, and more hope.

For twin brothers Assane and Ousseynou, who spent their lives struggling to keep up because of their bowed legs, this hope was found onboard a hospital ship.

“It was hard for us. We knew that the neighbors were laughing about the twins,” their mother, Awa, said. “But we could not hide Ousseynou and Assane away, so we all had to live with people treating them as inferior.”

Their parents worried that there was nothing that they could do to protect or heal their children, but then they heard about Mercy Ships. Not long after, the boys were brought onto the hospital ship known as the Africa Mercy, where they received surgery to correct their bent legs.

“When they came back to the ward after the surgery, and their legs were straight in their casts, I was so, so very happy,” Awa said.

After the surgery and once their casts came off, the physical therapy sessions began. Eventually, the twins were moving faster and more confidently than they had been able to before.

“Since I gave birth to Ousseynou and Assane, I have never seen them run,” Awa said. “The surgeries created this opportunity. It is something that comes only once in a lifetime.”

For kids like Ousseynou and Assane, your support means more than free surgery — it means renewed life!

For more than 40 years, Mercy Ships volunteers, partners, and crew have worked to bring safe surgical care and medical training to those in need in sub-Saharan Africa.

With our hospital ship, the Africa Mercy, our team of professional medical volunteers have provided life-transforming surgeries that repair cleft lips and palates, remove cataracts, remove the burden of tumors and goiters, and more. And soon, Mercy Ships will take the helm of our new, custom built hospital ship, the Global Mercy which will more than double our capacity when deployed alongside the Africa Mercy.

The need for safe, reliable healthcare in West Africa is overwhelming. But, the good news is that your support this #GivingTuesday will help Mercy Ships bring hope and healing to even more people!

By partnering with us, you can help bring twice the hope to the many children and adults who have felt burdened and defined by their conditions for so long. The need is great, but together, we can make a world of difference, one person at a time.

Thank you for faithfully working to see the world changed, and to give hope, one life at a time.
