infrastructure improvements and renovation projects
Mercy Ships personnel provide project management for renovation projects in host nations, using local construction crews. Renovations are completed to provide necessary structures for Mercy Ships project delivery during the field service. Following the departure of the Africa Mercy newly renovated buildings are returned to the Ministry of Health for their use. In this respect, renovations solve the immediate needs of Mercy Ships as well as long-term needs in the country for structural improvements.
The Hospital Out-Patient Extension is a non-clinical, temporary accommodation for patients who have received healthcare services onboard the Africa Mercy and their caregivers. Once discharged from the hospital, patients can stay at the HOPE Center as they continue to recover. For these patients, the HOPE Center provides a safe, secure, and hygienic facility where they can reside until they are able to return to their homes. The HOPE Center frees precious bed space in the hospital ward on the ship.
The dental clinic is located at an off-ship facility to serve the large number of dental patients that Mercy Ships serves. Mercy Ships Dental program addresses dental needs by providing preventative and restorative treatment for women, men, and children in the host country. The program offers critical dental services by treating thousands throughout each field service.
This project supports an integral component of the Mercy Ships Mercy Vision Project. The Mercy Vision Project addresses blindness and other eye maladies associated with cataracts, pterygium, strabismus and other eye surgeries. Surgeries are performed onboard Africa Mercy. As part of the Mercy Vision project, Mercy Ships deploys the Ophthalmic Technical Team that works within the port city conducting secondary screening for patient selection, pre-operative assessment, post-operative treatments, measuring visual improvements, and providing optometric services as needed. Much of these activities will be conducted at a local clinic site.
When necessary and appropriate, Mercy Ships will conduct renovations at the local hospital to improve the capacity and quality of surgical care. These renovations will be implemented in alignment with the PUMP model for team training.
Renovations could include:
- OR Renovations
- Improved Power Source
- Water and Septic System Repair
- Improved Walkways and Roads
