meet Laurin & Esther Avada
Position: Mechanic Fitter and Ward Nurse Educator
Volunteer Service: 2 years and ongoing
Ship: The Africa Mercy
Laurin first heard about Mercy Ships through a random Google search. He felt that if he could combine serving the Lord with a ship and using his hands, it would be the ideal fit. When he Googled missionary ships and saw the work Mercy Ships does he was immediately sold.
For Esther, her journey to Mercy Ships was 10 years in the making. “When I was about 16, a lady came to our church one Sunday evening and talked about Mercy Ships. And I really wanted to be a nurse. It was back in the day of slide shows so they just had before and after photos. I sat there with my jaw open. I turned to my mom in the car and said, one day I’m going to do that. And ten years later I finally came.”
The two met in 2014 when Laurin joined as the ship’s plumber and were married in 2015 before returning to the ship to serve as a couple.
